The puppy ugles is a stage of every poms life that occurs between the ages of 4-6 months. This stage consists of the puppy loosing its downy puppy fur and the growth of its new adult coat. A poms adult coat grows very slowly, so for a few months your puppy may look scraggly, like that of a child in its adolescent stage. Some poms get it bad, while others breeze through it just fine. There is usually no rhyme or reason to the uglies either.
One day your puppy will be a gorgeous ball of fluff, and the next you may notice he/she is loosing clumps of fur, his snout looks longer, and he looks tall and scrawny. You may wonder if you have a purbred pom or not, or you may think your puppy is sick. But this is all completely normal and there's no reason to worry.
Usually by 6 months of age, your puppy will stop loosing fur and he/she will have a noticeable amount of adult coat growing in. By 12 months(1 year) your pom will usually have a lovely coat and look like a pom. And by 2 years, your pom should be in full coat.
Remember though that each pom is an individual and they ALL go through the uglies stage just a little bit differently. Some may start the uglies sooner than other and some may start late, but just remember, your pom WILL bloom into that gorgeous pom you always wanted eventually!!
